Yohei Akao's Thermal Spring: A Luxurious Blend of History and Innovation

Unveiling the Award-Winning Thermal Spring at Hotel The Mitsui Kyoto

Immersed in the rich culture and history of Kyoto, Yohei Akao's Thermal Spring design at Hotel The Mitsui Kyoto offers a unique blend of luxury, wellness, and hospitality. This design, a winner of the prestigious Golden A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2021, showcases Akao's innovative approach to integrating local geology, spirituality, and memory into a relaxing spa experience.

Yohei Akao's Thermal Spring design is inspired by three core elements: the geology of Kyoto, the spirituality of the city, and the memory of the land. Kyoto's underground water basin, abundant with water and covered with rocks, served as a significant inspiration for the design. The spiritual experience of water, light, and sound found in Kyoto's many sacred temples and shrines also influenced the design. Lastly, the original scenery stones of the land were revisited and placed within the facility, adding a touch of historical memory to the modern design.

The Thermal Spring is located in the basement of Hotel The Mitsui Kyoto, right in front of the historical Nijo castle. The location adds to the value of the design, as it is steeped in Japan's deep history and culture. The design utilizes natural hot springs that spring up from the site, combined with the scenic beauty of Kyoto, to produce a luxurious space in the basement floor.

The realization of the design involved modifying scenic stones on the land and reusing them for stone sculpture and floor stone. A clay wall that expresses water using the indigo dyeing culture of Kyoto and a granite wall inspired by groundwater veins were also incorporated into the design. The total area of the Thermal Spring, including the entrance and corridor, is 469 square meters. The basement also houses other facilities, including a spa treatment and fitness area.

The design process involved extensive research on the location and history of the land. The design team carefully narrowed down the appropriate way of land, ultimately creating a unique space with a story that can only be expressed in this land. The biggest challenge was realizing a space that combines a sacred atmosphere and geology. The design was completed by paying close attention to the selection of the material and the level of light.

Yohei Akao's Thermal Spring design is a testament to the designer's innovative approach to blending history and modernity. It showcases how thoughtful design can create a unique, luxurious, and relaxing experience that reflects the local culture and history. The design's recognition with the Golden A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2021 further underscores its excellence and impact on the world of interior design.
